The Social Media Release (SMR) is back

For those who are curious but clueless about the applications of Web 2.0 or social media in general, the Social Media Release (SMR) might serve as a good starting point. It's similar to a regular press release, but it is delivered online and includes various interactive elements, such as embedded video, audio, images, RSS, links to blogs and more.

It also utilizes keywords and other elements to help make sure that it is "seen" by the online communities. For a great introduction, see the Brian Solis article, "The Definitive Guide to Social Media Releases."

Identifying PR Leaders

How much do we know about PR? Not as PR professionals, but dealing with PR. Leadership is crucial to the success, reputation and future of teams, organizations and professions of all kinds. Being a PR Leader requires qualities, values and skills.

Based on that, Heyman Associates conducted a survey and got some interesting data:

Some highlights from the survey:

- Strategic decision-making: PR leaders are strategic decision-makers.

- Exposure to sources of leadership skills and development: Work experiences, individual initiative, and access to role models are typically the richest sources of leadership skills and development.

- Strong role models: Role models exert the greatest influence on beliefs about leadership values, practices, and questions.

Welcome to PR Bytes Blog!

The PR Bytes blog is an extension of its Yahoo group, owned by User G. This is a place for public relations professionals to discuss a wide range of timely, topical PR/communication issues, especially as they relate to the Internet, to New Media, Social Media and to ways that technology impacts public relations - as a practice, and as a profession.

The list is open to all PR professionals worldwide (we currently have 1,000 members) and has developed a real community committed to sharing ideas and resources. Networking is encouraged (though blatant self-promotion is not), as that is often a vital part of issues-oriented professional discussions.
